‘You’re only ever going to be as young as you are right now, and for me I wanted to live a fulfilling life during my 20’s, not just morph into what is considered to be socially acceptable’
With a desire to see the world and a passion to share her experiences with others, Brooke saw launch to her own travel blog World of Wanderlust in the final months of 2012. World of Wanderlust aims to inspire, inform, and intrigue and offers a non-biased, authentic advice and reviews that showcase cities across the globe through the eyes of an enthusiastic traveler with a passion for new experiences, cultural immersion, food, wine, fashion, and adventure.
Today 24wanderlust was fortunate enough to be able to talk to Brooke Saward and gain insight into the beloved World of Wanderlust.
What makes World of Wanderlust different to other travel blogs?
Brooke – World of Wanderlust started off as a hobby for me, so it has always been a very personal look inside my life traveling. I think that’s the great thing about travel blogs, they’re always going to be for individual and personal as they are unique to the person writing them. I also aimed to keep the name very relevant to my style of writing – e.g. “World of Wanderlust” to me is a place on the internet you can go to satisfy your travel withdrawals, cravings, etc. Ultimately I want it to be a source of inspiration for people to look at and go ‘Wow! I didn’t think about traveling there’, or ‘Wow, I haven’t heard of that place before, I wanna go’.
Do you speak any other languages? What is the number one language you would like to learn?
Brooke – No! It’s something that I always think about, but my language skills are limited to conversation in both French and German. I’d love to speak proficiently in both.
When you were in high school, what were you aspiring to do afterwards and how has that changed since then?
Brooke – Highschool was a weird time for me – I still wasn’t sure who I was let alone who I wanted to be. I was heavily involved in dance, theatre, and music during this time so I always had a pipe dream to perform for a living. As time passed I soon realised this dream wasn’t realistic and I wasn’t prepared to throw my entire self into it only to be knocked back with the thousands of talented kids looking to do the same. Once I left year twelve I actually had 6 months off before deciding to go to university to study law. I studied law and international relations (combined degree) for two years, before deciding I would just complete my studies in international relations so I could travel more, which is what I’m doing right now. You’re only ever going to be as young as you are right now, and for me I wanted to live a fulfilling life during my 20’s, not just morph into what is considered to be socially acceptable by studying until I was halfway through my 20s, and then going into the workforce.
What is the best and worst thing that has happened since the launch of World of Wanderlust?
Brooke – The best thing has of course been the amazing opportunities that have presented themselves by having the website! I have traveled so much more this year. Since launching the website I’ve been right across the USA, vietnam, Europe, queensland, and am about to head back to the USA again shortly. The worst thing has probably been learning the hard way not to mix business with pleasure.
What goes into the preparation of a WOW trip?
Brooke – This is probably the hardest part people don’t understand – there is so much preparation that goes into a trip before you get to the fun part! Often the hardest part is scheduling – I always have so much to fit in to a small time frame. As for the logistics of how it all works, I have an upcoming book which explains how it all works and how to make a living as a travel blogger!
What is your number one rule for maintaining a good online presence?
Brooke – Stay true to yourself. This is the most important thing not just for your readers but more importantly for yourself. Sometimes things don’t go according to plan and sometimes life deals you a massive blow, but the only way to move forward is to acknowledge it, be honest about how you are feeling, and move forward.
What advice would you give to anybody starting a travel blog?
Brooke – Buy my book! It explains how I got to where I am today, and how I have turned my love for traveling into a job.
