When it hit

When it Hit, Family, Airport

It finally hit me. Not when I received my passports, not when I bought my suitcase, not when my flight was booked, not when my bags were packed, not when I said my goodbyes to everyone, not when I arrived at the airport, not when I checked in, not when I left my family, not when the plane took off. It was not until 20 minutes into the flight when the plane passed over Mooloolaba; that is when it hit me – what the hell am I doing?

I looked down upon the beach that I knew so well. It just happened to be a few moments after I found notes from my family and best friend hidden in my hand luggage. I realised that I am leaving my family, my friends, my home and everything normal to me. It was also the moment I definitely knew this is what I want to do with my life. I want to travel, I want to see the world, I want to have as many adventures as I can. When looking back on my life I don’t want to be proud of the things I have like a house or car, I want to be proud of the things I have experienced, the people I have met and life skills I have learnt.

Our choices give us opportunities, our opportunities give us experiences and our experiences create us to be the person we are today. My choices may have not always pleased everyone and I did lose a few people I really cared about. I made many choices which would lead me to this opportunity. I needed money for my dream, so I chose to work five hours after school and weekends to save money. During these times, my friends would be going to the movies, beach or shops – which was sometimes tempting when I was looking at a seven hour shift. Although my job also helped me mature a lot for the trip, it gave me confidence and skills that I will use throughout the trip and throughout my life time. It also made me meet some wonderful and very special people. My part time job was very time consuming but I loved it and thanks to that job, now I am sitting on a plane on my way to Europe.

I also have my family to thank a lot for the fact I am sitting on this plane. Their support towards my trip is incredible and I am very lucky to have them. Both my parents are very inspirational for me and definitely helped create my love for travel. My close friends have also really helped give me confidence which is what I needed for the trip.

As I sit on the plane, heading for the unknown everything couldn’t feel more perfect. I was finally on my way to travel and explore the world – my wanderlust was truly beginning!

Bon Voyage
